Les Rhizomes des Sorcières ‘19, La Cave des Nomades, France
Madly sought after & epically covetable, the name of this wine translates to ‘The creeping rootstalks of the witches,’ which makes me love it even harder. This wild creation is a blend of grapes from two plots, exquisitely encapsulating the scent, vibe & feel of coastal Banyuls, in Languedoc-Roussillon. Les 9 Caves is a communal space for the local winemaking ‘Nomades’ to work in, consisting of around 8 hectares of vines, spread over 12 plots, planted at varying altitudes over schist and limestone. After direct pressing the juice is fermented half in inox (stainless steel), half in barrel before ageing for 10 months in old barrels. With intense aromas of fruity, citrus notes, & sweet spices, she is fresh & full bodied with a lush warmth & elegance. There’s a herbaceous vibe, a slap of sea air & a rolling finish that feels like it could carry on for days. She’s been made by musicians turned winemakers & she sings with finesse, depth & pure awesomeness.
