Aussie Bum & the Frog ‘18, Lucy M, Anton van Klopper, Australia

Lucy M is the winemaking pseudnym for Anton von Klopper, the humble godfather of the natty movement in Australia. No one describes their ‘raison d’etre’ better than the don himself: ‘We hunt, fish and grow things for the table. A table without wine is sad, so we make wine.’ A true thinker outside the box, Anton is a master at assemblage, or blending…a wizard at natty potion making. The Gamay & Gris for this blend come from Robert Surmann’s black sandy vineyard on petrified schist in Totness, while the Pinot heralds from The Deans farm in Piccadilly valley which is red clay over sandstone. Anton packs the whole bunches of grapes in alternating layers into open top puncheons where they are hand plunged occasionally, for about 10 days, before continuing their fermentation in small old barriques. The result is a light cranberry & cherry bomb with keen acid & barely there tannins. Dead unusual & dead delicious this heady, aromatic blend is frankly unmissable, from the bro who chooses craft over recipe, everytime.
